Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. By 2022, the American Cancer Society estimated that 147,950 new cases of colorectal cancer would be diagnosed, with approximately 53,200 deaths expected. This includes at least 3,640 cases in patients under 50, reflecting a 1.3% increase in this population.
According to scientific studies, several risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing polyps or colorectal cancer:
- Certain foods: Red meat (such as beef, pork, lamb, or liver) and processed meats (hot dogs and deli cold cuts). Cooking meat at very high temperatures (frying, broiling, or grilling) produces chemicals that may increase the risk of cancer.
- Physical inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer, while regular physical activity can help lower it.
- Obesity: Being overweight, increases both the risk of developing and dying from colorectal cancer.
- Smoking: While it is well known that smoking causes lung cancer, it is also linked to colorectal cancer and other malignancies.
- Excessive alcohol consumption: Colorectal cancer has been linked to heavy alcohol intake, as it can lead to lower folic acid levels in the body.
- Age: About 9 out of 10 people diagnosed with colorectal cancer are at least 50 years old.
- Medical history: Having a history of colorectal polyps or being a colorectal cancer survivor increases the risk of developing the disease again.
- Inflammatory bowel diseases: Conditions such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) cause prolonged inflammation of the colon, increasing the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
- Type 2 diabetes: People with type 2 diabetes (usually not insulin-dependent) are at high risk of developing colorectal cancer. Both type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer share some of the same risk factors, such as being overweight.
